why you should work out on vacation

It’s less about the work out and more about the community.

Yoga Deck at Outsite Co Santa Teresa, Costa Rica

Wellness tourism has seen a huge uptick in the last 5 years and I think it’s here to stay. Something I’ve noticed is that these types of resorts marketing that they are a “wellness resort experience” are insanely expensive. Don’t get me started on the retreat aspect of wellness tourism… I am definitely drawn to these types of experiences but can not afford to drop 3-5k for a 5 day trip “flights not included.” Don’t get me wrong, if this fee is no big deal for you then by all means indulge for the rest of us!

A great alternative I have found for myself while traveling is to book classes at the local pilates, yoga, and strength gyms. Not only does this make it feel like a tailored wellness retreat, but I can still travel with my own budget while getting the experience. The best part of it all is meeting locals and fellow travelers seeking out a healthy lifestyle. It’s amazing how showing face in a place 2-4x makes you more approachable and therefore easier to connect and make new travel friends. You will also pick up a few new vocabulary words in the language of your destination.

For me personally, travel is all about connecting with the people, the place, the natural elements and yourself in this new environment. Next time you travel somewhere new, go to google maps and search your type of workout and get booking!

As I travel for this next year, I will be repeating this process and hopefully one day I will do one of those fancy retreats ;)
